yucky run

I met B at the park this morning – and she brought a friend. Our intention was to run 5minutes, walk 90 seconds, and repeat the intervals for 5k. I was the one holding the group back today. Isn’t it sad when that happens? Something pinching between my arm and my neck, and I think it was because I had my cell phone in my hand. I usually keep a cell in an armband IF I have a cell. But today I ran out the door knowing I had to wake up Wendy and her friend who slept over, so I grabbed my cell and didn’t think much about it. I left Wendy’s cell turned on next to her sleepy head on her pillow. It worked, I did wake the girls up, but something so little sucked up my run.

Today I had my first adventure in couponing using the tips from my client. I got $46 worth of stuff from CVS for $19, plus a $5 reward to use next time! And while I was there I ran my CVS card through the machine and got a Nuetrogena for Men coupon, which Brian rubs all over his bald head for sunscreen, so I know what that $5 will be used on.

Which brings me to Where-to-find-coupons Tip #3:

3. Social Media
Facebook, Twitter even YouTube provide links to coupons from just about every merchant and service you’ve heard of. Need a new dress? “Like” your favorite retailer’s Facebook page and print out a coupon. Heading to the grocery store? Check their Twitter feed for coupon links. Lastly, look for coupon bloggers who create instructional videos on YouTube that include similar links.

My mom called me today to get permission to order Seventeen Magazine for my daughters. I guess the “permission” part was because of the sex articles, but they’ve been so in to clothes (Alice) and hair (Wendy) that I’m sure they’ll enjoy reading it.

Tonight Brian is making some kind of pork in sauce and I’m making sweet potatoes and spinach salad to go with it. I’m off to start cooking… enjoy the weekeend!

Join Our Ragnar Team!

Many of you have heard me talking about our Digital Running Ragnar Relay team, but do you really know what it is about? Do you really know how much fun it is going to be? You really want to be a part of all this running fun!!!

Quick run down of the fun… 12 runners split into 2 vans with 2 drivers. (Or the runners can be drivers, but for our team we will have dedicated drivers who can be back up runners if someone gets injured.) There is a starting city and an ending city for each Ragnar Relay. For the TN race, your team starts in Chattanooga and runs to Nashville – approx 193 miles.

The route is mapped out and each leg is predetermined – so the first person might run 3 miles and the 2nd might run 9, but it’s up to Ragnar and we’ll place you in the right spot based on your ability and comfortability. Each of the six Van 1 runners does a leg, then they meet up with van 2, pass off the baton – which is actually a slap bracelet, and then everyone in van 2 runs a leg while van 1 tries to find some eating and resting time. (But not bathing, that just doesn’t happen. Baby wipes are your friend!) Once you and all your teammates have run once, you get to run again, and yet again. So everyone has 3 legs over the course of 30+ hours straight through the night. You might be the 6am or the 6pm… depends on your legs and the speed of your runners.

Our team is about the fun during the run, and the social aspect of the grand adventure behind it all. So, our Ragnar Relay TN team is perfect for any runner! If you have elite running friends that do 12 miles before 7 am with one eye closed, have them read this. And the buddy who just started the Couch to 5k and needs to get off of Diet Coke should read this too! Coach Brian will place them in the correct legs of the race.

There is an after party that usually includes a free drink, live music, some bar running special in town…but you’ll be too tired to dance or party so we’ll have to do that the next day together.

The race is Nov 4-5, so there will be great fall midwestern leaves and temperatures… and perhaps hills…

We’ve got it ALL figured out for you! You get to hang out with running buddies (always fun!), we’ve divvied up gas, lodging, van rentals and race entry fees. And I’ll be the “Team Mom”, so I’ll have the little things you might forget, like antibiotic ointment, safety pins, tissues, sunscreen, a cooler of cold water, yoga stretches at breaks, etc.

We left our Florida Ragnar – running from Miami to Key West – hungry for more. Sure you’re tired and just plain hungry, but if you love it – you leave wondering, “When do I get to take part in this craziness again?” and again… If you want to learn more, click here.

Run Disney’s Wine & Dine

This is a post for the “I can’t” excuse runners.

Maybe you say: I can’t run faster than a 10 minute mile, but I put in 3 miles, 3 days/wk.

Or you think: I can’t run farther than 2 miles, but I can walk all day if I have to.

Perhaps you believe: I am more motivated to run when other runners are around me, but I suck on my own.

I’ve heard all of this, plus the bad knees and old shoes excuses too.I’ve probably muttered something like it myself.

Well, now’s your chance to throw excuses to the wind!

My husband couldn’t run a mile without getting winded. Now he coaches himself, our daughter, other adults and a local track team to distances and speeds they never thought possible. With research, dedication, motivation and a smile – you can become a better runner.

And now you can join a group of others longing to complete a Half Marathon!

Whether it’s your first Half, or you’re looking to PR and beat your last Half… And the best part is – it’s the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon, which ends at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. The race begins at 10pm and ends with an after-hours, private party at Epcot just for runners (and their paid guests).

Me at the Princess 5k

Brian can coach you over the next 7 months (or 6, or 5, depending on when you sign up). And he’ll do it VIRTUALLY. No matter where you are. Talk to him about your Point A and he’ll work you up to that point D (for Disney!) You’ll get a workout schedule that will help you progress in a realistic manner with a goal in mind, helping to preclude injury or defeat. Or for a higher cost he’ll also help you with your diet along the way and give you his cell # for daily pointers or check-ins. He’s coached people who couldn’t walk a mile, and those who wanted to break a 7-minute mile.

Many people who try to train on their own have the drive to run a first Half, but don’t have the knowledge or experience to put together a plan that won’t leave them hurt, winded, or annoyed. That’s where Brian comes in!

And then, when you arrive in Orlando for the weekend of the race, you’ll have Running buddies! A whole club of people running together, cheering each other on, checking out the expo hall, grabbing lunch – and a private event just for the Digital Running Club that weekend too! A race is always more fun when you are part of a team! If you can stay in Orlando the next day, you’ll go with your new running buddies back to Epcot to enjoy a full day of the Food & Wine Festival. Brian and I have met friends there the past few years, and it’s because of our delectable times there that he put this club together. He hopes people enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes as much as he does.

… And Disney knows how to put a race together! We’ve been to the Disney Marathon, Half Marathon, Princess 5k, Cross Country Classic, Race for the Taste and more Disney races over the years and we’ve seen it all! From snow (yes, snow in Orlando) to strollers made to look like Aladdin’s Magic Carpet! The music and the characters and the Disney Park sights and the fireworks will keep the race fun and make the time fly by!

Then come the finish line perks! Disney medals are fun, you’ll have a free Taste and Sip at your private after-hours Food and Wine Festival, you’ll get a shirt and a goody bag. And probably a banana and a muffin because there are always bananas and muffins.

This is it! This is your time to lace up those running shoes and say, “Screw you, excuses! I’m running with my new friends through the happiest place on Earth! I’m going to feel healthy, fast, powerful and awesome doing it too!!”

To read all about the packages Brian has to offer including coaching, packing tips, and just letting someone with years of expertise tell you where to go at Disney so you don’t have to read through their pages of mumbo jumbo, check out the Digital Running Wine and Dine page.

Wordy Wednesday – surprise party

Hi All,

Summer has hit full blast here. The kids are off school, pool parties are going on, tequila has been drunk, and Disney days loom ahead.

Memorial Day my daughter’s friends threw her a Surprise 12th Birthday Party. She was totally surprised and the party was a BASH!! The birthday girl below has an orange arrow over her head.

sagesparklers-sm

Today is National Running Day. I actually went walking. A mom from my daughter’s class went through chemo last year and we’ve started walking most Tues/Thurs mornings together. She’s not at a running stage yet. I still go to the gym Mon-Wed-Fri and karate Tues/Thurs night.

It’s also Juneathon - the month where you try to be physical every day.

June 1 and June 2: I walked about 45 mins in the AM and did karate in the PM. Thanks to RunDMT for reminding me!

We’ve decided that our summer family week away will take us to the mountains of TN. We have a cabin reserved in Gatlinburg (sp?). So if you have any advice for that area, Pigeon Forge, Dollywood, or the Great Smokey Mountains – please let me know.

Alice had her first 7 mile run with Brian. She made it through without walking, but they did stop at 2 drinking fountains and one beach shower during that time. They were near Clearwater beach and I’m sure it was toasty and humid (88 degrees? Feels like 98?? It was only 9am…)

I’m going to try a day from this summer shape up week tomorrow, but I’m not sure if I will do speed or strength:

and I plan to finally make an oatmeal breakfast cookies this month. And a cheesecake in TN.

My birthday is Saturday :)

Sat, Sun, Mon

Saturday we fixed some plumbing. The project is now complete! We had to reroute the hot water to the kids shower, the kids sink and the dishwasher. Done!

Then I played Mom a bit and carpooled kids to parties, went to Target, etc. If you have an aqua kitchen, look for cute clearance items at Target like canisters and paper towel holder, etc. But don’t look there for a headband with a large funky black flower, because you won’t find it.

Sat night we went to a party for a Ragnar Relay friend. It was billed as a “beer pong” party. I’ve never played beer pong and neither has Brian, and I don’t drink beer – but we went and we learned. I’d prefer a germ-free margarita version.

Sunday I started the day hungry and with a bit of time to kill, so I made Speedy Banana Bread Pudding for me and Alice. No one in my family eats the end pieces of the loaf of bread (but me) so we usually have a bunch saved up in the freezer. I defrosted a bunch of slices (8?) and a mushy banana I had stored there that Alice left in her locker. I mashed the banana, tore up the bread, added a few eggs, a bit of milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and ground ginger. Then I cooked it up in a buttered pan and served with maple syrup and almond slices on top. YUM!!

Brian and I have been wanting to repaint our front shutters. They were forest green and faded in 10 years of Florida sun to light green. We found a spray paint at Ace Hardware for outdoor vinyl in a violet color and sprayed those down. Bright and cute! I’ve already overheard the neighbors complement them.

That night I was a kitchen beast. I had Indian food cooking to store up for work lucnhes, Mexican food for dinner that night, and choc chip cookies for the kids’ lunch boxes in the oven. We followed the Nestle Toll House recipe, but instead of 2 sticks of butter we used 1/4 stick butter, 1/4 cup oil and 1 banana. They kept a great consistency and the added banana flavor was light and subtle. We also added cinnamon.

Today – Monday – I started the day with 2.2 miles around the park with Brian. For me it was a hard push, for him it was “slower than after I got a cramp in my calf at the end of the marathon.” :P

I came home, stretched, did 60 bicycle crunches, showered and went to work.

wendy-lanternI’m lucky running didn’t bother my feet because Friday I was at IKEA for a couple hours with a client/friend in 2.5″ heels and got a couple blisters. But she gave Wendy a polka dot hanging paper lantern for her room, and the smile on her face was worth it. Plus, I let her climb on her desk and use the drill herself to hang it.

Tonight Brian is grilling turkey burgers, and I have an alum foil packet with asparagus and garlic in the toaster oven for me (drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with chili powder and pepper) and edamame steaming up for the girls.

Work has been busy! Working on a couple new web sites. Learning a bit about MX Servers. Life is busy, but good!
