Fit2Run and Fudgey Cake

Thurs night I tried something new. We had been doing the occasional Thurs night run around the baseball stadium (endearingly known as “The Trop“), but it was time for a change of scenery. At last Saturday’s Tampa blogger meetup, I received a flyer about the Fit2Run Runner’s party. You probably don’t have a Fit2Run near you, which is just too bad! It is a running store with a very large shoe selection, running gear, a smoothie bar, clothes, and treadmills with video cameras hooked up to them so you can have a gait analysis. They usually have a large presence at Disney runs in Orlando, so you can look for them there.

Anyway, one of the Managers is runner and coach Gary Robinson, and he put together a team of women training for the Women’s Half in St Pete. (Which will be about 3 miles from my house, so let me know if you come to town for it.) I think they meet 3x/wk and they pay him something or other. But you can join in on Thurs night leaving from the Fit2Run store in the nicest mall in Tampa for free. And once a month or so the Thurs night run becomes a running party – he gives a little talk afterwards and there is free food and some adult drinks. There are supposed to be shoe vendors there letting you try their shoes (like, actually run in them for the night) and free sock giveaways.

On the way to the mall it was pouring rain, and we had to cross the bridge from St Pete, which was bumper to bumper in 6pm + thunderstorm traffic. We were 5 minutes late, but the rain was down to a drizzle, and they were just thinking about actually attempting the run.

I had S with me. She usually runs with Brian & Alice because her pace is about 2 min faster than mine, but she had already done her 6 miles that morning and kind of came just to see what it was about, so she agreed to drop down to my slow pace and stick it out with me. We did about 3.8, and the first 3 miles disappeared because S talked through them the whole way. It was delightful! I told her when I am sick, or in pain, or getting blood drawn – doing something where I want me mind off it – I try to get Brian to talk to me but he can’t just babble, especially when asked. I love being distracted when I’m doing something I don’t enjoy. Oh, like during childbirth! But S on the other hand was able to chit chat with me for 3 miles about running clothes matching other running gear, and where to order them online, and whether she should blog about running fashion, and the wedding she’s going to be in soon, and and and… it was great! When we got home I said to Alice, “I love running with her because the time flies by as she talks!” And Alice agreed completely.

At the end of the run I tried their TROPICAL BLEND smoothie made from fresh Pineapple, fresh mango, fresh papaya and OJ; as well as a piece of their hummus sandwich. They also had turkey sandwiches, beer, wine, and “pink squirrel” smoothies. The shoe vendors cancelled because of the rain, though.

I came home and had a green Flatout with some melted provolone, baby spinach and spicy mustard. I think it was after 9pm, though.

Fri morning I woke up for Core Yoga. The teacher sounds cutesy and immature with her word choice and inflection, but the class she puts together is great. I wish she could see a video of herself and tailor her verbiage better. She says “go ahead” a lot, such as, “Now we’re going to go ahead and tuck our toes, and go ahead and lift your hips…” Hopefully she’ll improve with time.

I had a decent day at work. I was putting together a website for a yoga instructor, ironically. And a logo for a new product coming on the market that I am not allowed to discuss :) We also enjoyed some online buzz after we ran our interview with Meghann Anderson of the Healthy Living Summit.

Fri night we rented Limitless.(Not a spoiler) Bradley Cooper (who I enjoyed in Alias) is a writer who lives in New York City. He is failing to meet the deadline to turn in his new book. One day, Eddie comes across the brother of his ex-wife, and he offers Eddie a sample of a new drug, claiming it has the ability to help you access 100% of the brain’s power, as opposed to the normal 20%. Eddie accepts, and chaos ensues. De Niro is in it too. Some fast-paced action but not the whole way through, not too gory, not too sexy. I give it an A- and we were all able to enjoy it as a family. (Remember my girls are teenagers.)

I also promised Brian fudgey cake this weekend. I baked 2 9″ rounds and expected to frost them into one cake, but Wendy did not like the frosting, so I over-frosted one and left the other plain. I used this recipe for the cake, which then left me with not enough cocoa for the Nestle frosting. But I had Baker’s squares, so I made their frosting. The cake is delicious but stuck to the pans a lot even though I sprayed and floured. So if you make this, spray and flour a LOT. I used whole wheat flour and slightly less sugar, and you can’t tell at all!

Saturday we woke up at 5:15 to meet people at 6am to run. Brian and S did 10 miles with one of our other regulars. S brought me an awesome present, a new OM Bondi Band! So now I have one with an OM for yoga and one that says RUN for running! (I’m sure I’ll get a photo eventually…) COUPON: Use code FIVE at checkout on BondiBand.com to get 5 Bondi Bands for $25. S would encourage this so you have one to match each running shirt! I did 3 miles, and for the first time in a long time I had to do it alone. I ran along the waterfront and there was actually a cool breeze I had not felt in probably 4-5 months! I’ve now showered, made a list of stuff to get done for the weekend, and I hope to have some swimming pool and BBQ time before Labor Day is done! Enjoy your long weekend!

Logging sweat

I was having a conversation with my 14 year old about logging her runs. As in, she doesn’t log her runs. If she kept track of when she ran, and the distance, and the speed – she’d learn a lot from it. She said, “It’s not like you track all of your workouts.”

“It’s called Running Betty… you know, my blog? Of course I do.”

Which is really the point of this. I don’t tell all about my day and my relationships and my friends in a long stream of consciousness. If I did, it would be a lot more interesting. But the point is for me to remember what felt good and what didn’t.

Suddenly I’ve lost a little weight. I wish I knew what did it… walking around NYC for days? Eating light before my trip? My body finally remembering it hasn’t been on birth control in 5+ years? Not buying ice cream? My increase in yoga the last 4 months? It sure would be great if the answer were crystal clear, but it’s not. And though I don’t long to lose weight, I do know I feel better about how I look just under 140 rather than just over 140.

Workouts:

Monday - 90 mins core yoga

Tuesday - walk/run with B for 3 miles. And it’s Running Partner Appreciation Day according to some Facebook event, so I am celebrating her.

Wednesday - PM Bodyflow at the gym. 60 mins with adult contemporary pop-rock Les Mills class. Ahhh…

Thursday - 4 mile Fun Run at Ferg’s that I did maybe 2.5 miles of. I would know if the organizer actually had mile markers like he says he’s going to. I won a gift card to a running store and had BOGO Tijuana Flats for dinner that night with friends, so all was good otherwise.

Friday - 90 mins core yoga. B came and enjoyed it and bought a $45 unlimited month pass. You can try a taste of her class here. The last podcast on the page is core, but it’s also the last one to load. I also mopped the kitchen floor Friday morning. We’ll pretend that my kitchen is huge and it’s a thorough workout.

Saturday - I had a lot of work to do and wasn’t going to work out, but my friend Michelle called and asked if I had a “yoga-type workout” planned for the day. On Wed. night, Susannah who taught Bodyflow, said she’d be teaching the Sat morning class, so I suggested that to Michelle. You don’t need to have a strong Yoga base for the class, but you’ll feel stretchy and toned afterwards. I decided to speed up my work and go with her. She said it was “even better than she expected”. And I said, “I’ve been telling you that it’s awesome!”

I don’t call just anything awesome :)

And tonight my daughter flies home from Paris! I hope she has lots of fun stories to share. Since we can’t share clothes.

Tomorrow Brian and I are taking part in a Yoga for Runners Workshop! I’ll videotape. He’ll do some running Q&A.  We’ve also launched our first Digital Running contest. You can win a year of coaching if you think you’re our next bi-monthly blogger!

My cousin is getting married in Chicago soon. National Geographic has a web page dedicated to free things to do there. What’s your favorite way to spend a day or night in Chi-town?

Half Marathon Training

You may notice I don’t train for big races. I don’t really run more than 3 miles. And I’m not about to start now. I have all the necessary supplies at my fingertips – the great shoes, the Jack Daniel’s book, the running coach HUSBAND who is snoozing away in the next room.

But that is not my thing. Now, a weekend yoga workshop on the other hand…

So why do I profess to be training for a half marathon?

I have a different role to play…

As Brian builds his team of runners who got a custom training plan from him for the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon in Oct, I know that I will be the Mother Hen of this running team. I’m good at being a mommy, just ask my kids. I’ll make sure there are Sharpies, sunscreen, safety pins, bottled water that’s not too cold, Band-Aids, granola bars, sweat rags, baby wipes… that’s what I do. I don’t know when I became detail oriented or organized, but people keep telling me that I am. Even my mom!

Part of my organized-ness is that I have been there and done that. I’ve woken up before 7am at Walt Disney World, stood jogging in place while trying to warm my hands with my own breath, going over a race course in my head. And I’ve been on the other end – making sure I have my big, cardboard sign, pom-poms, and calculating someone else’s pace in my head so I can give a high-five and take a photo at just the right time.

Me, Alice, Goofy, Brian and Wendy - 2009

PLUS I KNOW Disney. I’ve been to the Orlando parks more times than I can count. We stopped counting around our 47th visit and that was years ago. I know where the bathrooms are (as does any woman who has been there pregnant and with potty-training toddlers), where fresh fruit can be bought, what rides they are building in the magic Kingdom right now… I’m a bit of a Disney freak and I don’t talk about it much on this blog – but my daughters ARE in fact named for Disney characters, and I did honeymoon at Walt Disney World. In fact, the only time I have cheered Brian on through a marathon was at Walt Disney World. (Not the only RACE, mind you, but the only marathon).

And now my daughter wants to train for the Disney Half in Jan 2012 because she’s old enough to enter. I can just picture that Donald medal around her neck. And yes, we know there is a Princess half. We’ve been to that race and ran the 5k before it together. And no, I don’t think she’ll run in a costume or a tutu, because she won’t just go to RUN, she’ll go to RACE and is already concerned about proof of time for the right Corral.

(Blonde moment: The very first time I ever went to a Disney race I was so amazed that there were a bunch of women named “Coral” running. Then I realized I was reading the “Corral” section on their bibs. Doh!)

Coach Brian at work

So really, if you haven’t run a half before, or if you have run one but now have a specific goal time in mind, and you think a custom training plan from Brian could get you from your Point A to the Finish in a way that satisfies you, please know that you’re not just getting the running support of a great, funny, caring Coach. You’re getting the backup from a great Mommy! And though I may not be in your hotel room to tuck you in (that could get weird), I will be there at every Digital Running Club event that weekend cheering everyone on, applying aloe and sunscreen as needed, and handing out cookies.

I sign off today wishing great luck to everyone at the St Anthony’s tri this morning just 5 miles away from me here in St Pete. Especially my friend Heather who came down from NOLA to be part of a relay team. I’ll avoid driving downtown this weekend, and I will check out the official race photos, and the photos my friends took of their kids doing the Meek and Mighty challenge yesterday. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger!!

Quick update for today

Went to karate last night and worked on forms and wrist grabs. Not a lot of cardio.
3 miles down this morning. Ate well today. Avoided dessert but had a shot of Amaretto.
Great meeting with potential client!
Now ready to kill off a couple episodes of Rita Rocks on Netflix through my Wii with my girls.
