Me? On a boat?

Wed night Brian was taking Alice for a run – and I can’t keep up with them – so my friend Lora met me to walk their course. We talked about a lot of things, including my upcoming trip to NYC which I am very excited about!

Thurs we read about a fun run in downtown St Pete that was 4 miles looping out and back from a bar. I can usually get friends to run for beer, but not when I learn about the event at 3pm. I did manage to get B, who I used to run with on Tues AM and miss my girl time with. She just got married, and a 4 mile run makes for perfect honeymoon-chat time. Which we did. And ended back at the bar with, not beer, but some very special water with added elements that is $18 a 6-pack. My daughter says she’s had it before, out of our tap at home. Ha! I said, “But the bottle clearly states to take all vitamins 30 minutes before drinking.” To which the ever growing 14 year old brain responded, “So you believe it because it has instructions?” B won a box of Marathon Snickers bars, and she’s gluten free, so she gave them to us and Alice was in heaven. We hadn’t had dinner before the run (it started at 7pm) and now it was pushing 9pm and she was hungry, so she wolfed one down and tried some pink MIX drink that I couldn’t try because it had tea in it and I’m allergic to tea.

B and I found out we missed a loop somewhere in the course, so I don’t know if we ran 3 miles, but it was fun and there was a steep incline up a bridge, and we put one foot in front of the other. It was also the first time someone asked Alice if she was in high school and she could answer “YES!”

Wendy is off hiking in Mt Zion. Red rocks, sleeping under stars, kayaking… pretty darn awesome. I hope to the Lord above she does not lose her camera. Not only because it was expensive, but because I want to see evidence of the awesomeness she experienced. I won’t get to see her right when she gets home because she flies in about 3 hours after I leave for NYC, so we will cross paths in the air and Brian will bond with the Tampa airport.

Today I am off to YOGA with Destry! Power flow class that is changing the shape of my tummy completely. I say tummy and not core because it doesn’t really affect my @$$ much. But I love it! If it doesn’t rain while I am in NYC, I have found Yoga in the Park at 3 different parks both AM and PM to try. (And a free burlesque show if I dare go out alone at night in the city).

Tonight we are going to be on a boat for a sailing challenge. We have NEVER sailed. Ever. And it’s a 2-couple thing, the other couple invited us and they know what they are doing. He even works for Harken. Which if you have sailed you might know manufacturers sailboat parts. And they said to just follow their lead. My first question was, of course, what should I wear? Swimsuit, shorts, sneakers, water socks?? I’ll worry about getting hit in the head by equipment later when we’re out on the water… gotta love new adventures.

Speaking of new adventures – if you are new to running, we have a lot of women who are new runners on our Disney Wine and Dine half marathon team! Early Oct in Orlando won’t be cool, the leaves won’t be orange, but it WILL be the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival, and it’s a HM that starts at 10pm so you get to finish around midnight with the park open to just race goers. And you get to party with us and the Digital Running Club crew. If you aren’t new to running, you can run up ahead with Brian and a couple other fasties on the team. And I, of course, will be the team mom with all the gear and organizational skills.

Going to find my zen now. Enjoy your weekend!!

National Running Day

I’m a little disappointed because while I was on my 3 mile run this morning I saw a turtle laying eggs at the park. I stopped to take a photo with my phone, but for some reason it did not save. I ran past that guy 3 times, and I wish I could share his cuteness with you.

Tues I went to Yoga, which is not a typical Tues for me. But with my Mon teacher taking Memorial Day off I shifted things around. I am glad I did because the new Tues teacher was great. I heard about her last year, and met her when I helped organize Energize Tampa Bay, and she remembered me too. She smiles a lot while she is leading the class, which I love. And she wasn’t too esoteric.

Today was the last day of school. My older daughter is at a “trash the uniform” party. After wearing her school uniform for 10 years she gets to wear JEANS to school next year. I imagine polo shirts in rainbow colors are headed our way.

Tomorrow we are taking the day off for some family time before the summer traveling begins and we feel disjointed until Mid-July. I am going to NYC alone and hope to do lots of free yoga in the parks while I am there. I have a schedule spreadsheet because I don’t want to forget anything. I may have found free improv and burlesque too… just maybe.

As the heat picks up around here, I try to find outfits that won’t look sweaty. I really like the new Jockey fabrics that keep you 3 degrees cooler. I would buy ten pairs of running shorts for myself and each daughter to live in until Oct. if that were realistic. Instead we have cute little dresses from Forever XXI.

Sunday is my birthday :) Surprises happening tomorrow!

Go ME Time!

Wow, I can’t believe it’s Thurs already. And what’s more, I can’t believe it’s MAY already!

Monday started off great with a Core Yoga workout at Yogablu. I like their new morning classes with Destry teaching much more than then ones I was doing with Kate teaching. The timing is the same, and really about 1/2 hour later than I would like, but I can skip washing my hair now and then for an awesome yoga class! She took a few minutes to share with us “how to float”. You know, when you’re going from downward dog to chaturanga and just float instead of a true jump. To see her greatness in action, check out this video. (You have to log in to Facebook to view it. Her cool stuff starts at 1:20.)

Tues I did a workout at the gym. I’m going to be performing in a script reading in a couple weeks, and I thought spacing out on the elliptical while reviewing the script sounded just right! I did 30 mins there, then some core work on the mat with a medicine ball.

That night I had a meeting at school about the upcoming 7th grade snorkel trip. I’m so jealous! My daughter is going snorkeling with her buddies, then hiking a few weeks later in Utah in Lake Powell, then to PARIS a couple weeks later, than to St. Louis to see Grandma. I need to climb into her purse or something. But in the meantime, Brian and I are planning a little getaway for the 2 of us to Chicago and I’d rather save up money, calories, a new swimsuit and anything else for that trip.

Wed. I went to the park for some Fitnessista Boot Camp stuff. Sprints, walking lunges, push ups, tricep dips, butt kicks, etc. I wanted to stop a lot of the women I saw at the park walking. They were all strolling along slowly with their arms loose at their sides. And many of these women were easily obese. I wish I could tell them that simply bending their arms and adding more effort could yield greater results. I wish I could tell them that picking up a tiny bit of speed can make a huge difference. But that makes me the weirdo talking to strangers – and for all I know 3 of these 7 women are right out of knee surgery or something… so I kept my mouth shut.

Speaking of surgery — my mom had surgery. She had a breast reduction! I can’t comment much on this, because I won’t see her till May 20… but I’ll let you know what I think then.

Today (Thurs) I worked out at home. I did a Denise Austin workout from Fitness Magazine (I don’t have a subscription to it, but my dog does, and so far his name has not been sold out by them to anyone.) It’s considered a no-treadmill cardio workout, but I would call it a free weight full body workout. Lots of squats, light hand weights – see the whole thing for yourself here. I had to do round three without my 5 lb hand weight, my shoulders were exhausted.

I’ve been collecting a lot of running demographics lately for Digital Running. Running as a sport is exploding, and especially among women. The # of people running half marathons is up in strides – and a majority of these half marathon racers are women. Check the results of your favorite HM on Active.com and they usually have the # of men vs. women at the top of the results page. I’m so thrilled, and I think a lot of this has to do with women finding healthy, inexpensive ME time.

Go ME Time!

Tomorrow I’m back to core Yoga. There’s also a Fri eve class I like, but I don’t make it there often. Saturday a high school friend is coming to visit while Brian takes Alice to the Middle Division State Meet. She’ll be running what WOULD be the 1 mile and 2 mile at a varsity meet, but for MD it’s the 1500 and 3000.

Did you see Glee this week? Good one!

Do you have a favorite place to go / eat in Chicago? If so, please share! Thanks.

Long Weekend

Due to the end of a school schedule trimester and President’s Day, my kids were off school Fri and Mon, making a long weekend with some family time. We did laundry (woohoo!), worked out, went to parties, cooked, etc.

Today Alice and I made chili together. We made some changes to this recipe. Here’s what we did:

Turkey & Bean Chili

Chop: One onion, one green pepper, 8 cloves of garlic and a jalapeno pepper.
Saute: veggies in 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil over medium/low heat for about 5 minutes
Brown: a pound of lean ground turkey in the veggie mix.
Stir in: 3 Tbsp chili powder, 1 tbsp turmeric, 2 Tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp oregano, 3 Tbsp tomato paste.
Cook: for one minute, stirring constantly.
Pour: 1.25 Cups red wine
Mix in: 1 large can crushed tomatoes, 1 can kidney beans, 1 can great northern beans (beans drained and rinsed)
Add: 2 bay leaves.
Give everything one last stir, bring to a simmer and then cover and cook for 20 mins.

Alice took the seeds from the green pepper and planted them in a pot in our front yard. We’ll see what happens with those.

I also made the easiest Indian food ever by using canned veggies.

Easy Aloo Saag (spinach & potato curry)

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1/2 onion(s), sliced very thinly
2 cloves garlic, crushed/minced
1 can diced potato
1 can chopped spinach
1 can garbanzo beans / chick peas
1 teaspoon ground turmeric, curry
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or chili powder (or more if you like it hot!)
1/3 C broth
1/3 C coconut milkhttp://runningbetty.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

Directions:
Put the spinach in a colander to drain. Squeeze out any liquid.
Heat the olive oil in a saucepan. When the oil is hot, throw in the mustard seeds
When they begin to pop (only takes a few seconds) add the onions and garlic, and saute for a couple of minutes until softened (not browned).

Add the spinach, potatoes, chick peas and spices and stir fry for a couple of minutes.

Add broth and coconut milk. Simmer on med-low 8 mins.

Enjoy with basmati rice or naan. Serves 4.

I woke up this morning at 8:46 and figured if I rushed I could make it to 9am BodyJam class. I did an hour of BodyJam, which is like a jazz dance class, and then 30 mins of core and stretching. I started driving home but didn’t feel quite done, so I stopped at the park to run a mile loop. Just as I finished and got to my car, I saw Brian in the difference. I did a fartlek to my husband, who said he also didn’t feel quite done so he walked around the park. We decided to just sit by the lake a bit in the 70 degree awesome weather and hang out. Then we came home and tackled our work day from our laptops.

Friday was the deadline for the Ragnar Relay 2011 Miami to Key West video contest. I could have spent another 3 days on ours if I had nothing else to do, and nothing else for our intern to do… but alas entering video contests is not the best way for us to spend our time. Here is the resulting silliness.

Lindsay, you were missed on Sat night when we went out for Daphne’s b-day. Much of the Ragnar gang was there, and 2 of them are planning weddings. I tried beer (again) and hated it (still) even though the place had fun flavors. I ended up with a flight of granny smith flavored cider.

We put a streak in Wendy’s hair. She had a dance party Sat night and Sun night, so we played with makeup too. (See her silly tweenage pic at right…) We made a fudgey cake from a box. We watched The Social Network. Alice bought a new book by the lady who wrote Pretty Little Liars. There’s a lot of PLL excitement in this house. The kids either watch that or My Name Is Earl. And I went to the dentist.

That’s the scoop over here! I hope you had some fun times this weekend.

Does anyone know how Les Mills Bodyjam compares to Dance Trance?
